Internship Program For Health Care Innovators

Supporting tomorrow’s change makers in all health care-related fields.

Supported by the Carole Kerr DiGioia and Anthony M. DiGioia, Jr. Memorial Fund, Interns in the Health Care Innovators Program will join the AMD3 Foundation’s team to promote bone and joint health and wellness in Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond. Harnessing the power of educational outreach programs coupled with community partnerships, our goal is to implement innovative approaches to drive change and aim to reduce disparities in care.

2025 will be the inaugural year of the Health Care Innovators Program, and one or two applicants may be selected each year. This is a paid internship. The internship period will be a minimum of 3 months full-time with the option to extend the program up to 12 months if mutually beneficial.

More Details:

Interns in the Health Care Innovators Program will work with a dynamic team to strengthen community outreach and education efforts across the region. This mission is enhanced by partnerships with the Magee Bone and Joint Center, the Wellness Center for Bone and Joint Health, as well as the Innovation Center — all UPMC-related departments.

Together, our outreach programs and community engagement efforts include hundreds of clinical and non-clinical team members, advisors, and contractors, spanning multiple events and educational events each month.  These programs and events aim to first educate communities on the importance of bone and joint health while identifying and reducing disparities in care.

Interns will be integral members of this work, providing support across all programs and all areas of engagement with patients and community members. They will have multiple opportunities to co-design, implement, and lead community outreach efforts and will assist in our efforts to expand those programs into new communities and clinical sites.

Based on career interests and education level, Interns will have the opportunity to help craft their own experience and projects.

Our Partners Make All The Difference:

The Bone & Joint Center at UPMC Magee Womens Hospital (BJC) — Hip and knee joint replacement surgery is one of the most frequently performed Orthopaedic surgeries among the U.S. population. The Bone and Joint Center at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital has been recognized as a “Center of Excellence” in total joint replacements since the program’s inception. Our partnership with the BJC connects community members with a wealth of expertise and resources on diseases of the bones and joints, particularly focused on non-operative as well as surgical treatments for those that have knee and hip arthritis.

The UPMC Wellness Center for Bone and Joint Health (WC) — A new department at UPMC, the WC addresses the growing burden of conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis and patients’ individual needs with personalized care programs.  With the WC, we’re able to offer community members access to comprehensive, non-operative treatment options and educational resources.

The UPMC Innovation Center (IC) — Merges the art and science of medicine by developing tools and technologies that improve patient care and their experiences. The IC empowers our team – and community members – with tools like Joint AI, What Matters To You, and Shadowing, to continually learn, improve, and multiply our impact in our communities.

Our team includes experts from each of these key partner organizations and our impact reflects it. Join this innovative and dynamic group. Apply to the Health Care Innovators Internship Program today and become the changemaker of tomorrow.
